TORCS features many different cars, tracks, and opponents to race against. TORCS stands for The Open Racing Car Simulator. Vdrift is available for Debian, Ubuntu and Mint on Playdeb: įor other distributions you can download it directly from the website: Building around Vamos, using code adapted from his earlier 3D engine experiments, Joe created the first version of VDrift. Looking around online, the open source Vamos Automotive Simulator performed much better, although the graphics and features were minimal. A fan of Gran Turismo, Joe had a lot of fun trying to drift in GT4, though he was disappointed with GT4′s physics after loss of traction. VDrift was created by Joe Venzon in early 2005. The driving physics engine was re-written from scratch but was inspired by and owes much to the Vamos physics engine. VDrift is a cross-platform, free/open source driving simulation made with drift racing in mind. They are: Vdrift, TORCS, Speed Dreams, Supertuxkart, Racer, Trigger Rally and Stunt Rally I’m not a great fan of this genre but I’ve played some of them and they have great graphics, and you’ll not miss what you can find on a Windows Computer. He isn't always as popular as all the other racers from the land of Fosseria, but he's still remembered by those who waited and waited for an opportunity to build their own race-cars, a long time ago when the blueprints weren't so freely available.Today I propose to you 7 nice games about driving, they are all open source and freely downloadable. Both of those firebrand young racers have grown into fine champions.īut its still too early for Puff to retire, so he sticks around, racing amidst the cheering crowds as the days go by. He also admires Gnu's spiritual successor Tux. Nowadays, a much younger generation of racers have taken to the tracks, and Puffy watches his spiritual successor Beasty with admiration and pride. Everyone who's anyone tries to share their race-car models in the happy little land of Fosseria - a land which, for all intents and purposes, Gnu and Puffy co-founded (although Gnu, for his almost belligerent insistence on openness and sharing, receives a lot more of the credit). A time came when they had become so good, they could easily make Nolok's companions bite the dust. But they improved slowly, sometimes with direct assistance from their fans. At first, those professional vehicle models could really make our two heroes bite the dust. He has standards.īack in the day, people would come from miles away to watch Gnu and Puffy take on Nolok and other selfish drivers and their secretly built cars. "Not my business what they do with it", he would say. Puffy just gave away his race-cars to anybody who wanted to race. Not only did he make his blueprint available for anyone to use, he also wanted to make sure that any modification of his race-car would also be likewise free. And among the brave young hippies who first started this trend were Gnu and Puffy. Now of course, there were exceptions - some of the racers believed that the spirit of racing, its power to draw in people from so many walks of life and the challenges of race-car design called for a more open attitude towards race-car blueprints. It was pretty sad, really - all those amazing, brilliant, talented people who didn't know how to build a race car but really wanted to. If you didn't apprentice under a professional racer, you would never learn how races work. A really long time ago, racing was all about professional people building their cars in secret and jealously guarding the secrets of race-car design.
